It's shocking and hard to believe, but 82% of leaders have no formal leadership training!
- This is up from 68% of leaders in 2019! Apparently, the problem of accidental and ill-trained leaders is getting worse.
- Perhaps most shocking: A quarter of the 82% are in senior leadership roles!
Leadership training is crucial for effective leadership.
Whether you’re a C-suite executive, a senior leader, or a first-time manager, it is worth honing your leadership chops.
The assumption is often that smart people who have been successful in their primary discipline can just figure out the people side of leadership. This is a disastrous assumption.
So, how can you support your 'accidental' leaders?
Ultimately, you need a comprehensive and well thought out plan to get your leaders from 'accidental' to life-giving. You can't just throw off-the-shelf training at this problem. Your approach needs to be practical and grounded in your unique business AND it needs to make sense to your CFO! This is a great time to invest in a coach for a new leader. Don’t wait until they are 3 years into their role, struggling, and have lost credibility with their key stakeholders.
