How Semantic Models Make AI Understand Your Business
|
Natural language queries only work if the system speaks your business language. Snowflake’s Cortex Analyst doesn’t just point LLMs at raw data, it builds a translation layer between your team’s questions and your technical schemas. That translation layer is the semantic model. It maps cryptic field names like "cust_id" or "L_EXTENDEDPRICE" to human concepts like “customer” or “revenue after discounts.”

Each semantic model is written in YAML and contains logical tables (representing business entities like orders or line items), facts (like quantities), dimensions (like product names), time elements, filters, and reusable metrics. These logical objects define what things mean and how they’re calculated, so when someone asks for “total revenue last month,” the model already knows how to answer. Relationships between tables are defined too, allowing the AI to join across entities without you writing SQL.
