The removal of ash trees in Saint Paul due to infestations of emerald ash borer and subsequent replacement with young non-ash saplings has altered the urban environment. In June, Chloe Andree ('23, biology), Romeo Gomes ('24, environmental studies), Lukas Lock-Scamp ('25, environmental studies), and Connery Ritter ('25, geography) worked with Prof. Mary Heskel (biology) to measure how tree removal and replanting is impacting neighborhoods across the city in terms of shade and temperature. To learn more about our findings (and also why we used fisheye lenses - which was more than just to emulate Beastie Boys videos), check out posters at the Summer Research Symposium in the fall! Submit Articles for Mac in the News
Submitted by: Dylan Hawthorn, Communications and Marketing
Mac in the News seeks to highlight and publicize the accomplishments, writings, and media appearances of Macalester alumni, faculty, staff, current students, and the college in general. To do that, we need your help. Were you quoted in a non-academic publication or the author of a recently published opinion piece? Maybe a former student is in the news and you want us to know about it. Please email communications@macalester.edu with a link to the article and more information about its Macalester connection for consideration. Articles published in Mac in the News may appear in the Mac Daily, be shared on Macalester social media accounts, distributed in alumni newsletters, and more.
For more information about media relations, please contact media relations director Joe Linstroth at jlinstro@macalester.edu. Questions about the Mac in the News section can be directed to Dylan Hawthorn (dwalker@macalester.edu).

Home on Summit Avenue Acquired by Macalester
Submitted by: Patricia Langer, Administration and Finance
With approval by the Board of Trustees, the property at 1645 Summit Avenue has been acquired by the college. This house, which came on the market over the summer, will become the President's Home following targeted renovations to address accessibility needs for members of our community with mobility limitations. Consistent with the goals of our Comprehensive Campus Plan, we seek to make all campus spaces accessible. The current President's Home is not accessible and could not be renovated easily to bring it up to ADA standards. The new President's Home will be used for hosting official college events, such as fundraisers and community celebrations that advance the college's mission and foster a sense of belonging. No decisions have been made about the disposition of the current President's Home.

Interested in Joining a Competitive Speech and Debate Team at Mac?
Submitted by: Beau Larsen, Center for Student Leadership and Engagement
Macalester students--now is the time to join one of our competitive speech and debate teams in Macalester's forensics program! Our teams have a cap amount of students that can compete so the sooner you reach out to the director, the better!
- Mock Trial: This 23-24 case is a criminal trial involving an art heist. Teams of six to ten perform as both attorneys and witnesses called to the stand to testify. Mac hosts the semifinal tournament in March and qualified for the national championship last April for the first time in eight years!
- Ethics Bowl: Teams of six students prepare arguments on fifteen cases for a regionals competition in mid-November. We were crowned the national champions after a final round versus the University of Chicago in 2022!
- Policy Debate: Teams of two debate a year-long resolution--this year's centralizes United States nuclear policy, including but not limited to the pros and cons of a No First Use policy and full disarmament.
- Moot Court: Teams of two present arguments in a simulated appellate court for a judge to evaluate and question. This year's case concerns the constitutionality of birth control bans.
- ModelUN: Students prepare international policy proposals and speeches for a seven-day National ModelUN conference in NYC.
Please reach out to me (blarsen1@macalester.edu) to learn more over email or schedule a meeting with me in my office in the Campus Center (CC 243)! I'd love to tell you more about the competitive teams housed in our forensics program and see which one is the right fit for you!
To learn more details, attend the forensics information session in the Kagin Ballroom on Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 6-7 p.m.!
