Max the Cat Asks the Library
Submitted by: Kate Roarty, Library
Question: Is the library website different? Where did the FAQ squirrel go? I can't find it! Do I have to resort to stalking squirrels on campus for information instead?
Answer: You’re right! The library website has changed. We’ve refreshed the look and design, but you'll still be able to search for and find what you need via the navigation menu. If you’re lost, contact us for help, or search our FAQs. You can sort FAQs by topics, like citations or hours, etc.
As for the squirrel… Maybe he saw you, Max, and got scared! I bet that if you look through the library’s FAQs, you’ll find him somewhere. Where better to start your squirrel search than at our Lost and Found FAQ? *whispers* follow the acorns!!
Your friendly neighborhood library staff,
Ellie, Digital Services Specialist
Have a question Max could ask the Library? Submit it through the Max Asks form.

Department of Physics & Astronomy Seminar: "Double copy: a new look at scattering amplitudes"
Submitted by: Kristine Spangard, Physics & Astronomy
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 3:30-4:40 p.m., OLRI 150.
Professor Tonnis ter Veldhuis, Department of Physics & Astronomy, Macalester College is presenting on "Double copy: a new look at scattering amplitudes."
"The calculation of scattering amplitudes is essential to the field of high energy physics, since amplitudes provide the bridge between theoretical quantum field theory models and detector results from particle accelerator experiments. Recent advances in this area have uncovered novel color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories. I will provide an introduction to these new developments and relate my own contribution in this area made during my sabbatical leave at the University of Groningen, namely a systematic classification of scalar field theories whose amplitudes admit a double copy formulation."
Refreshments at 3 p.m.

This year, we are excited to pilot a new program to allow students to stay on campus during Winter Break (December 21-January 15) who do not have another place to go. Students who register for winter break will have their card access restored for the break. Living on campus during Winter Break will look very different then it does during the academic year - dining services will be closed and places like the Leonard Center, Hamre Center, and Campus Center will maintain their regular winter break hours and student access. Each student on-campus during this time will have access to a kitchen in their halls. Additionally, the Open Pantry will be unlocked and open Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. during the December 21-January 15 time period for students to get meal supplies, if needed.
In order for students to register and obtain an exception to stay on campus during Winter Break, please follow the directions below:
-
Log into 1600grand using your Macalester username and password.
-
At the 1600grand page under the Student Life tab, click Housing and Dining Self-Service.

At the top of the page and to the right of the Macalester name and logo, you will notice three lines. Click on those lines and a menu bar will appear on the left side of your screen.
-
Click the Applications button on the left menu bar.
-
Select the Winter Break Application
-
Complete the prompts given on the application.
As a reminder, while many services will be limited and unavailable during Winter Break (primarily December 22-January 1) students will be able to use Public Safety, RHD on call, RA on call, and have 24/7/365 access to Press 2 counseling and Press 3 access nurse. Below are resources you may find helpful during the College closure or at any other point during your time at Macalester. Each of these are available 24 hours each day and every day of the year.
